Barcoding’s customer, a private port management company, was onboarding a shipping container company as its new client. The container company provides spreadsheets of incoming ocean containers before arrival at port. The port management company has to receive each container, store it, and record its location. At the client’s request, the port company must locate specified containers and deliver them to the correct vessels for shipping. Every action, from receiving to shipping, needs to be timely and accurately tracked.
The port company had no automated process in place to track receiving, storage, and shipping of its clients’ containers, so the process of locating containers and delivering shipments was manual, inefficient and time-consuming. There was no system for reporting container locations or movements internally or externally to customers. Further complicating matters, inaccurate client-supplied spreadsheets are the norm, making it even harder to properly identify and track locations.
Barcoding helped the customer install and implement IntelliTrack Consumables bundle, enabling the port operator to import data from the ocean container company’s shipping spreadsheets. When containers are received, the port operator can now quickly and easily record their receipt and storage locations. When the customer requests a container shipment, the port office uses IntelliTrack to create a pick list with the container’s exact location, along with the correct ship in order for its pickers to deliver it accurately.
The port operator now has complete visibility into the details of receiving, storage locations, picking, and shipping of all containers in its control. With accurate internal and external reporting of container receipt, storage, and movements, the customer now has an awareness of performance KPIs including on-time delivery and accuracy—and it has seen a dramatic increase in employee productivity, along with comprehensive loss prevention and significant cost savings.
