Understanding RFID with Patrick Richgels

Written by Barcoding, Inc. | Mar 29, 2020

Patrick Richgels, Director of RFID at Barcoding, Inc., recently wrote an article that was featured in the March edition of the American Rental Association‘s Rental Management Magazine. He shared some excellent advice on how RFID can be leveraged at organizations for a wide variety of uses.

All That RFID Can Be
Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) has been employed dating back to World War II, but in the last few decades, it has become an essential part of the modern supply chain.

RFID comes in two main forms: active and passive. Active RFID tags contain a transmitter and a power source, whereas passive tags are activated by a tag reader and don’t use a battery. Each format has its own benefits. For example, active tags are more expensive, but are great for highly valuable assets. Since passive tags are lower profile, they are great in a variety of solutions that require large quantities.

“The possible applications of RFID technology still are being explored and, as the technology becomes more accessible, more people are developing ways to build on the convenience the tags provide,” says Richgels. “As technology develops, opportunities for integration of RFID into larger, more complex solutions will continue to develop.”
