Scan a Barcode, Have Some Wine

While QR code scanning is rapidly catching on in the mobile app world, there’s not quite as many apps out there that scan 1D barcodes, and of those, not many that are fun! Meet the Natalie MacLean Wine Picks & Pairings app. Natalie MacLean is a James Beard Award-winning wine writer and her app allows her to share her knowledge of wine with the world.

By using the app to take a photograph of the barcode on a bottle of wine, tasting notes, scores, food pairings and recipes will appear. If you’re debating on what wine to buy at the liquor store—no problem, or if you’re looking through your own personal wine stock deciding what to serve with tonight’s dinner, the app’s got you covered. “Considering the vast selection out there, buying wine can be overwhelming. Besides, “you can’t taste it – at least not legally – until you open it,” said MacLean.
If you’re thinking, there’s no way the app will have the wine that I choose, then think again. There are over 150,000 different wines the app will be able to provide information on, sold all across the U.S.

The only thing the app can’t do is “…open the bottle for you,” says MacLean.

The Natalie MacLean Wine Picks & Pairings app can be downloaded for free from Apple’s iTunes store or from for other smart phones.
