RFID Turns Scrabble into Spectator Sport

When you think of the game Scrabble, you probably don’t think of it as a tournament-based sporting event, but you certainly don’t think of RFID. Mind Sports International recently held an inaugural tournament to bring together players for the world’s most popular “mind sports,” such as Scrabble.

However, Scrabble isn’t exactly a spectator sport, so Mind Sports needed a way to make the game engaging and entertaining to viewers. They used RFID by embedding a passive 13.56 MHz RFID tag into each tile and installed hundreds of reader antennas in the game board and tile holders.

With the addition of RFID, online spectators could see which words were on the board, in addition to which letters each player had and their potential word options.
