RFID Gets Furry

Russia Utilizes RFID Chips to Fight Illegal Fur Imports

Fur imports definitely aren’t a new thing, but pretty soon, they’ll be getting a high-tech upgrade. The Customs Union of Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan recently proposed the attachment of RFID tags on all fur imports.

A pilot project is set to launch in 2013 and will aim to track imported furs. Currently, its estimated that up to half of Russian furs may be contraband.

The RFID tagging project will also prevent importers from using subpar fur, such as formaldehyde dipped fur, which increases the size and allows it to be sold for less money.
