Recently, Barcoding, Inc.’s new headquarters on Bank Street in Highlandtown has made headway in its renovation process. Specifically, by October of 2019, developers Michael Burton and Mark Shapiro will finish redoing, restoring, and renewing the 29,000-square-foot building’s centennial features and amenities.
For years, our headquarters has been located in a two-story building on Boston Street in Canton. However, due to expansion and the rise in business, we decided to relocate. Barcoding, Inc.’s new headquarters used to house I.C. garment factory, which ceased its operations in 2009. Connected to the architecture, our CEO, Jay Steinmetz recalled visiting the factory years ago with his father to purchase jeans and sportswear for his father’s clothing stores.
Restoration before Relocation
With the decision to relocate, Barcoding, Inc. received tax credits on state and federal levels of approximately 1.5 million dollars. This sum has helped restore the building’s original features and pay homage to local history. In order to preserve history and practice sustainability, Barcoding, Inc. will repurpose sewing tables, carts, and a locomotive steam engine, as well as refurbish windows, framework, ceilings, floors, and double-sided elevators.
According to Shapiro, “We had to do a lot of work to get even get some of these things in good enough condition for repair. The floors took the longest. There was carpet and tile and steel planks that we had to get up, plus we had people in here for days pulling up thousands of nails and staples from the floors.”
Our new headquarters will be equipped with various offices, conference rooms, and production/testing spaces. The lower-level of the new building will have a gym, kitchen, and communal spaces to provide relaxation, happiness, and lower stress levels for employees. A rooftop-deck will also be available for events.
Our CEO added that it is amazing for a community to come together and restore itself, stating, “It’s a great thing to be able to take an old building in a community that needs a little push and revitalize it.”
