Droid Does NFC
Starting in January 2011 near field communication (NFC) Android trials will be ran by SoftBank, a Japanese mobile company, on the HTC Desire.
This Android NFC experiment will focus on creating a credit card type of application that will allow consumers to easily manage their cards from their mobile device. When it comes time to make a purchase, a card can simply be chosen from the app, and the transaction completed via NFC technology.
So far, MasterCard is working with developers on this app, which would ultimately create a standardized payment system, without the need to carry cash or physical cards. This would be particularly useful when traveling to other countries, where currency exchange can be tricky.
Right now, tests will be done in Japan, but I’m excited to see what the future has in store for this app. Imagine only having to carry your phone… no wallet. I’m sure the keys will be next to go!
