Barcodes Help Refugees in Sudan
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) recently adopted a new barcode technology in order to help distribute food throughout their refugee camps. The barcode system should reduce distribution time from 10 days to 4 days.
Families throughout the camp will receive a barcoded card that can easily be scanned in order to receive their food rations.
Prior to a barcode-based system, staff had to refer to a printed list of all of the families that were living in the camp. Their paper-based process proved to be extremely time consuming and error prone.
In addition to speeding up processes, using barcode technology helps to generate data on how many people are receiving rations, also capturing their gender and biometrics.
