4 VoIP Considerations

If you’re considering implementing Voice into your WLAN it’s important to realize that this technology has unique requirements when added to wireless networks.  Adding VoIP (voice-over-IP) to your wireless network improves responsiveness and creates cost savings, but it needs to be done right in order to obtain all of the benefits.  These are four considerations that you should think about before implementation.

1. Quality of Service (QoS) must be maintained to minimize end-to-end delay and provide solid sound quality. Businesses must establish priority across the WLAN to translate packet priority from the wireless to the wired infrastructure.

2. Businesses should seek secure encryption and authentication that won’t affect sound quality. Reauthentication must occur quickly between one access point to another, while still maintaining network security.

3. Consider the impact that VoIP will have on your entire business network. Examine the unique support requirements that adding Voice will involve and determine steps for resolving any problems or issues.

4. Businesses should implement central management of the RF environment to ensure reliable service and coverage.

These four considerations should help you examine some important aspects of adding Voice to your wireless network.  But talking to an expert before implementation is always the best rule of thumb.  For more information on adding Voice to your wireless network, or to speak with an expert, please contact me at ehodges@barcode.com.
