Telecom Bermuda utilizes RFID to track materials in transit

Telecom Bermuda provides world-class telecommunications services and equipment to Bermuda public safety agencies, the Bermuda Government, and the construction industry. Focusing on their core strengths of radio, paging, GPS, and wireless data products, Telecom helps to upgrade technology with local companies to improve how business is done in Bermuda.

The Business Issue

One of Telecom’s sister companies, East End Asphalt (EEA), uses large quantities of raw materials for their asphalt operations. As Bermuda is an island nation, the necessary materials for those projects arrive by ship five or six times each year. Importing material to Bermuda is a costly endeavor so the ships are always filled to capacity; unloading each ship takes roughly three days.

When the ships are unloaded, an EEA worker will stand at the docks counting the number of dump trucks leaving the dock yard with raw materials. Additionally, other workers are stationed at EEA’s yards counting the number of trucks that enter the yard.

Our Solution

Motorola RD5000 RFID ReaderTelecom Bermuda implemented an RFID solution using the RD5000 from Motorola to automatically count trucks entering and leaving both the dock yard as well as their two outdoor facilities.

Since this solution is deployed in a public yard used by many other companies, the readers could not be permanently installed in the dock yard. Telecom Bermuda solved that problem by connecting each RD5000 to a weatherproof car battery/enclosure which provides enough power for the three-day transfer of goods.

At the end of each day a worker goes to each of the three RD5000s and downloads data onto an MC70 mobile computer which is then transferred back to their host system.

The Result

East End Asphalt workers are now able to focus their time and attention on more important tasks without having to stand guard and count trucks for three days, saving valuable time in both labor, and resources. Contracted truckers are held accountable for their haul quotas and loads do not go missing.

“The reason we use RFID is to make sure the contracted truckers are meeting their minimum haul quota and to make sure a load doesn’t go missing.”
