Success Story:
New England Motor Freight
Background
New England Motor Freight (NEMF) is a family-owned trucking company in the Northeast United States. NEMF uses an IBM AS/400™ backbone to track and maintain their customer’s shipments. They pride themselves on continually investing in and upgrading their handheld terminals and modernizing their fleet to provide their customers with the best possible customer service.
NEMF was using legacy data collection equipment in their trucks to view routes and information, collect signatures, and obtain other pertinent information used by managers to make well-informed business decisions. They were looking to upgrade their handheld terminals as well as introduce new software that would allow them to more efficiently plan routes and expand lines of communication between their drivers and the dispatch center.
How Barcoding Inc. Helped New England Motor Freight
Barcoding Inc. examined their current operations, and after assessing their needs and existing practices, teamed with UPS logistics to offer a complete fleet management system.
Barcoding Inc. installed UPS’ Roadnet software on New England Motor Freights AS/400 backbone. The software was run on Symbol MC9060s, using thin client terminal emulation. Drivers maintain communication with the central dispatch facility through GPRS communication.
The solution provides strategic planning, daily routing, wireless dispatch and tracking, as well as enterprise wide visibility of planned and actual delivery information.
NEMF is now able to provide a smaller window for when drivers will show up. Customers can call up and find out exactly where a truck is and the estimated time it will arrive, cutting down a delivery window of 2 - 4 hours to roughly half an hour.
The Results
By installing this solution by Barcoding Inc., NEMF is able to show an immense decrease in transportation costs. This is especially important to them in the current era of rising gas prices.
They are also able to improve customer satisfaction, as routes can now be altered on the fly. By using the Symbol MC9060, New England Motor Freight managers can now pinpoint the exact location of trucks, find out where the truck is on a route compared to where it is supposed to be, and even monitor the activity of the MC9060 device.
The MC9060 from Symbol Technologies was chosen by NEMF due to its rugged performance and advanced ergonomics.
