Real Time Location with RFID and GPS

Barcoding’s solution works in outdoor yards where items are moved by heavy-duty equipment, such as fork-lifts, cranes, trucks, and loaders, not by man-power alone. These vehicles pick up their loads and track their movement through RFID tags and GPS tracking. By using RFID tags on the items, and RFID readers mounted on vehicles, the data collection task is taken out of the hands of the driver and performed automatically, allowing your workers to focus on picking items and not collecting data.

How it Works

When the driver begins their shift they log-in to an on-board vehicle mount computer, such as the Motorola VC5090, which will associate them with that vehicle and any action performed by it. At this point, a pick-sheet appears on the driver’s screen directing the driver where to go, or alerting the driver of item’s that need to be picked throughout the entire yard on a map which shows the closest items to the driver’s location. They then select that pick-item which removes it from every other driver’s queue, eliminating the possibility that two or more drivers are going to pick the same item.

The driver is directed to the item’s location via an on-screen map as well as beeping alerts that let the driver know when they are close to the item. When they reach the item, it is loaded, and the RFID reader verifies that the tag on the item corresponds correctly to what is to be picked. They are then directed to move the unit to a specific geo-fence area. When it is unloaded the GPS reader will verify that it is placed in the area.
