RFID Readers, sometimes referred to as ‘interrogators’, are electronic devices that transmit and receive radio waves. Readers not only interrogate tags for information, but they can also be used to program (write) information to tags. In fact, label printers that can encode RFID tags do this my means of an embedded reader module in the printer device.
The RFID reader uses an antenna to send and receive signals to and from RFID tags. The antenna can be either an internal or an external addition. In fact, some barcode scanning devices can add an RFID sled on to them to become a reader. Readers can also be fixed mounted; fixed mounted readers can be found at a receiving dock’s bay door or at an EZPass toll booth. A standard dock door or choke point fixed reader configuration is often called a “portal”. Portals create a field which the tag passes through, allowing the reader to send and receive information. Readers can be incorporated into other equipment such as fork lifts or assembly lines.

Fixed RFID Readers |
The IF30 is a cost-effective, high performance fixed reader that reliably reads and writes UHF RFID tags in “RF noisy” environments. The IF30’s receive sensitivity enables large populations of tags to be interrogated at high speeds, which is critical to many use cases involving dock doors, portals and conveyors. In addition to reading tags at distances over 15 feet (4.6 meters), the IF30 can filter tag data to prevent sending redundant information to the host system.

Building on the tested and proven platform of the XR400, the XR440 Gen 2 reader from Symbol Technologies offers maximum functionality for large-scale RFID deployments. This strategic platform is designed to help enterprises achieve competitive advantage by increasing inventory visibility and process efficiency to effectively reduce costs and improve profitability. |
Forklift RFID Readers |
RFID has always delivered the twin conveniences of hands-free scanning with little or no human intervention. Now, Intermec has taken that to the next level by adding the convenience of mobility with the new IV7 Vehicle Mount RFID reader. The IV7 joins an award winning family of readers that include several handheld and fixed mount form factors. |
The easy-to-install RX2 vehicle-mounted RFID reader is ideal for standard RFID-based forklift pallet move applications such as shipping, receiving, picking and putawayswhere EPC RFID-based identification of pallet loads and locations are used.
The RX2 will read EPC Class 0, Class 1 and C1G2 (Gen2) tags. The ultra-rugged RX2, designed to operate on the business end of a lift truck, comes with a simple mounting solution that requires no permanent lift modifications or lift downtime for installation. |

Extend the reach of your RFID network and achieve a new level of visibility into inventory and assets with the RD5000 Mobile RFID Reader. The compact, rugged reader can be installed almost anywhere — on material handling equipment such as forklifts and clamp trucks, on mobile carts, portable skate wheel conveyors or even in hard to reach locations where a cabled fixed reader would not be practical. |
Handheld RFID Readers |
Intermec’s expertise in real-world RFID implementations, combined with its knowledge about building rugged handheld devices, is reflected in the IP4 reader, an accessory handle for attachment to the popular Intermec® 700 Series Color mobile computers.
The IP4 delivers first-of-its-kind capability by combining the power of a handheld mobile computing device equipped with PAN, LAN and WAN radios as well as a multi-protocol RFID radio that can be used worldwide. |

Give your workers the ability to capture a comprehensive range of data — from RFID tags and bar codes to images with this flexible multi-function device. Single device simplicity translates into simpler and cost-effective mobility architecture with fewer devices to purchase, support, and manage. And whether your workers are on the manufacturing floor, in the warehouse, on the loading dock or out in the yard, the rugged design ensures reliable performance. |
RFID Portals |
Symbol's DC600 is a compact, packaged radio frequency identification (RFID) portal system designed to enable the rapid deployment of proven and reliable RFID technology at your dock doors and doorways. It lets you capture bulk data from a large number of tagged items as they quickly pass by. With the DC600 in place, you’ll be able to track RFID-tagged assets, products and cargo as they enter and leave your facilities and storage areas and move throughout your supply chain. |
