Barcodes for Boycotts

Activists are creating a mobile barcode scanning app to encourage boycotts

The Boycott Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement is developing a smartphone app that will assist people who want to boycott against Israel. The beta version of the app will be released in the near future and will allow people to scan barcodes in order to see if the manufacturer has ties to Israel.

The idea behind this is to give boycotters all of the information they need on a specific company before purchasing their product. The data associated with each company has been compiled by BDS, who supports the proliferation of Palestinian rights. While some are in support of the boycott, others are calling it anti-Semitic.

This app seems to be very specific towards one cause, but last year, we reported on Buycott, an app that allows consumers to explore different causes and campaigns and purchase products from companies that aligned with their beliefs, focusing on the positive rather than the negative.
