Barcode Hero: The Perfect Combination of Barcodes and Social Media

In an effort to make shopping more social, developers at Kima Labs have created Barcode Hero, an app that lets users scan barcodes of products they buy in order to unlock rewards, similar to Foursquare.

By scanning barcodes at the store, users can build up their points while Barcode Hero uses the information to update their database, in turn, creating a more personalized shopping experience.

While Foursquare allows users to become “Mayor” of a location, Barcode Hero introduces dukedoms and kingships. Users can even earn more points by writing product reviews, ultimately creating a hyper-social environment to shop. In addition to reviews, the app also provides price comparisions via PriceGrabber.

Although Barcode Hero is currently only available for the iPhone, developers plan on releasing it across all platforms. Barcode Hero will allow users, brands, and merchants to join together in order to enhance the shopping experience, while gaining information and insight into shopper preferences.
